How Do You Know If You Have Bed Bugs?

Bed bugs are tiny (about 3/16 of an inch) with flattened, oval bodies. They are usually reddish and will become swollen after a meal. You probably won’t see them since they feed and are active only at night and are exceptionally good at hiding in cracks and crevices during the day. However, you will see the evidence of their presence. Their bites leave a rash of tiny red bumps on the skin. You may see rusty specks of blood on your sheets or mattress. Their feces looks like flecks of black pepper and may also be found in bedding.

Are Bed Bugs Dangerous?

Bed bugs have not yet been noted as having transmitted any illnesses to humans but are suspected of carrying diseases like leprosy and Q-Fever. The rash from their bites can be itchy and uncomfortable. Bed bugs are prolific breeders and can go from a few individuals to a full-fledged, whole-house infestation in a very short time. They also spread from place to place quite easily by “hitch hiking” on clothing and bags. They produce a musty, foul odor offensive to humans.

How to get rid of bed bugs

Chemicals like pyrethrins and pyrroles are the most commonly used chemicals to kill bed bugs, but some of them have developed immunity. Chlorfenapyr is another chemical that kills these pests by disrupting their cells which can be a huge relief for those who suffer with infestations because it means no more itching or scratching in futility every night. We do provide beg bug extermination services if you are in need of help.

Seasonality

If there is an available food source, bed bugs will stay active. They may hibernate without food and in cold temperatures outdoors. However, since they are most often found as pests indoors the exterior temperature has no bearing on their life cycle.
